What a strange hobby you have....

I became more serious about art in high school and wanted to learn how to draw the human anatomy properly. My friends couldn't hold a pose, so I needed something else to help me out with my drawing. So in 2006, I scoured the internet and through a series of leads I stumbled across ball-jointed dolls.

I was blown away by their beauty. These dolls were not what I imagined when I thought of a doll. These dolls were not the classic short and fat porcelain dolls with ugly fat cheeks. Nay nay! These dolls were large (and small) elegant things with gorgeous faces. They were works of art and I wanted one.

Unfortunately for me, they were incredibly expensive. I could not justify spending so much money on something I would use just for drawing reference, so I booked marked the beauties and reluctantly shuffled off to find a different solution to my body pose reference.

Eventually I found the cheaper 22cm vinyl dolls that were made by the Volks company and purchased a family of them. I thought they were ugly and they were equally ugly at posing. Not to mention the proportions on them were horrendous. Most of them had tiny little feet and hands, which I am not a fan of.

I ended up using one of them in an art project, butchering the "little sister" in the process.

About a year later I sold the lot on eBay after discovering they had been discontinued and were worth more than when I bought them.

During my internship at a graphic design company, I had earned some extra money. Thus, in February of 2011, I finally decided to buy one. I found a company that sold ball-jointed dolls at a lower cost (Resinsoul), and then a website (JunkySpot) that had them in stock in the United States. On Valentine's day my first doll arrived, a Resinsoul Li in white skin, and I was ecstatic. After my first doll, I found out they were like potato chips. You can't have just one.

This hobby and I....

A bit of professionalism!

I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I find it extremely difficult to go places on my own, and crowds of people send me into panic mode. Such nervousness and fear prevents me from thinking straight, completely blowing my first impressions. These fears made going to college very hard, but I made it!

Because if my depression, the things I once loved to do where no longer enjoyable. I no longer seem to want to draw, or paint, or anything of the sort. After discovering ball-jointed dolls, I fell in love with them. I love to look at them and buy them (I have a problem). Ten years later, I am still obsessed with the hobby and just as broke!
I keep this hobby a secret from most people, as they would judge the HELL out of me. Most of my family has no idea...especially about the prices. At my age, this is extremely obscure and strange to most people. I pretty much enjoy this hobby alone. I don't have any friends in this hobby...or any friends...really...heh...(◞‸◟)

I still experience a few roadblocks with my depression and anxiety. I really want to customize my dolls, for example, but I can't seem to make myself to it. I think I am getting better though. I can talk to people normally, and am starting to actually make phone calls...to PayPal to approve my doll purchases. Driving is still a no-go for me, as well as going anywhere new by myself.
I graduated from Cameron University a with a BFA in Studio Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design. I have interned at a printing company as a graphic designer and performed pre-press operations for both an offset press and a digital press. I also have experience working on a commercial printing press, as well as an etching press. I've developed my own film and photography prints. I am an experienced screen printer and have prepared artwork and screens and printed t-shirts and other garments.

Favorite Doll Companies

I have many favorites, and the list seems to keep growing lately. I prefer companies they offer long thin bodies, fantasy sculpts, and a literal rainbow of resin colors. The following favorites are in no particular order.

Doll Chateau

A wonderful company with plenty of obscure sculpts with long thin bodies! They are a bit pricey, though.

Dream Valley

A sort of sister company to Doll Chateau. Great sculpts like Doll Chateau at more affordable prices!

Miracle Doll

Miracle Doll is an up and coming company. I am not too fond of their normal body sculpts, but I adore their head sculpts!

Universe Doll

I discoved this company when they only offered a few items. I LOVE their sculpts and want each and ever one of them! Even the all the hands they offer!

Doll Zone

I think this is another sister company to Doll Chateau and Dream Valley? I do know that Doll Chateau and Doll Zone use the same resin. They have beautiful bodies and their prices are decent.

Soom

I love Soom's (The Gem) fantasy sculpts. Unfortunately, I don't like the fact that they only release something once. The tan resin is awful in terms of yellowing. A bit pricey too. Also, press F to pay respects to Soom's Rosette School of Dolls. May they rest in peace. *cries*

Luts

Luts offers a variety of fantasy sculpts and are reasonably priced. They are not exactly long and thin, but I think I can live with that when it comes to this company.

Serenade Doll

OH MAH GAWD, YES! I love everything about Serenade Doll. I just wish they would release a male body! I would sell a kidney for it.

Doll Leaves

Doll Leaves has beautiful head sculpts and the prices are fantastic. The face-up artist they have is also top notch, even though I never buy face-ups.

Withdoll

I love with doll. Their sculpts are so cute and their MSD sculpt are very reasonable priced! They have many fantasy head sculpts and good selection of colors to choose from (even though those colors are limited).

Doll-Family H

Doll Family-H has only recently become my favorite. Their old sculpts were less than desirable (the eyes were way too close together). They must have gotten a new sculptor though, because now I am falling in love!

Dollpamm

Dollpamm is another new one. I don't love all of their sculpts but there are a few that are starting to grow on me, such as Dollpamm's SD sized dolls. They are bit expensive though.

Honorable Mention

Resinsoul

Resinsoul has the most fantastic customer service on the face of this planet. They will do mods for you, custom resin colors, switch body parts, you name it! All you have to do is ask and pay a small fee. The only downfall is that a lot of Resinsoul's sculpt are single jointed or have those horrific "cap" joints. Fortunately, they have recently started releasing new bodies with proper double joints. Did I mention the prices? WOW! They are a steal! Please keep on doing what you are doing Resinsoul. :)

Least Favorite Companies

I do have a few companies that I love to hate. Here are a few. They are not in any particular order.

Fairyland

Yes. Fairyland. IT'S EVERYWHERE. I am so sick of seeing Chloe. They are beautiful sculpts, but I guess people tire of them quickly because Fairyland dolls are basically the only doll you ever see for sale. I do like that they release fantasy sculpts, and I do own a few Fairyland heads...but...meh. I think Fairyland is also one of the most recasted companies out there, so you really need to be careful when buying Fairyland dolls second hand.

Mirodoll

The prices are fantastic, but the aesthetics are SEVERELY lacking. I love that they do custom colors, as that is VERY rare for a doll company. There was also the "copy" fiasco not too long ago. I purchased two dolls from them before and the service was less than ideal. The resin was chalky, the joints fit together horribly, and they could NOT hold a pose. One of the dolls I ordered had discolored resin on some parts. I guess they ran out of resin halfway through, so they cast the torso in a different batch and the difference in color was very obvious. In this case, you get what you pay for.
