VINTAGE; 1987-1991
Fashion Star FilliesThese beautiful and distinctive fashion inclined horses create excitement and demand attention wherever they go. Each horse has a beautiful pearlized body and can be identified by a gold star on their cheek. Cliff, the only stallion, has the golden star on his shoulder. The horses came with numerous fashion accessories and have a personalized brush. Separate outfits could be purchased and many looks and hairstyles could be created!

A Breif History |
My History |
Fashion Star Fillies were developed by Kenner around 1987 in response to My Little Pony. Tonka acquired Kenner which allowed these Fillies to be sold overseas under the name of Fashion Stars and Fashion Stars Ponies.
They were a huge success, but eventually began to decline about the time Hasbro acquired Tonka/Kenner. The Fillies could not compete with My Little Pony, which were produced by Hasbro. The Sassy Sixteen mold was eventually repurposed and used for the Sunstar and Moondance horses from Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders or Starla and the Jewel Riders for those outside of North America. Fashion Star Fillies and Fantasy Fillies were/are often confused for one another as they could look similar in appearance. Fantasy Fillies were a sub-line of Grand Champions that were produced by Empire/Marchon. It's no wonder they were being confused for one another as Fantasy Fillies were designed by the same talented designer as the Fashion Star Fillies! I have collected every single toy that was mentioned in "A Brief History!"

By the time I had discovered Fashion Star Fillies as a kid, they were already discontinued. I had been buying them off eBay with the money I had earned doing chores and odd jobs. I was also buying Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders toys, but I never noticed that the horses had the same poses as some of the Fashion Star Fillies.
After collecting a dozen or so, I pretended I didn't like toys anymore because I was "at that age". I was not supposed to like toys at that age and due to bullying/peer pressure I had to let them go. I eventually sold all my toys on eBay which included my Fashion Star Fillies. I had always regretted selling my Fashion Star Fillies. As I got older, I decided I didn't give a shit what other think and started collecting all kinds of toys and dolls again. Decades later, Fashion Star Fillies are a lot more pricey, hard to find, and in much worse condition than they were when I first collected them. Now some of these horses can sell for HUNDREDS of dollars. UGH! Why did I sell them?! Why did I let peer pressure get to me?! Why did I ultimately decide I needed more money for anime and JNCO jeans?! |
The Competetors
I also collected quite a bit of their competitor, My Little Pony. I mainly collected the Sweetheart Sisters from G1 because I didn't like the short fat ponies of the first generation. I then discovered G2, which were everything I loved about MLP, but with slender bodies and longer legs. Unfortunately, G2 was short lived. They had no movies or cartoons and very little cannon. From what I have read, not many people collected them either. I was obsessed with them, however, and even went as far as buying the overseas exclusives.
I probably had one hundred ponies and sets and I sold them all on eBay as a lot for a very small sum of money. I could have gotten a lot more out of them, but I was young and did not know the value of money (or the ponies for that matter). I don't really regret selling them as much as my other toys. I enjoyed them while I had them, but moved on to bigger and better things. I just regret not selling them at a higher price. I am sure whoever bought them from me on eBay all those years ago enjoyed them. That's what counts, right?
I also had every single Fantasy Filly, including the mini fillies! I also had quite a collection of Grand Champions. Guess what I did with all of those? Yup. I sold them on eBay, how did you know?!

I sold so much stuff on eBay, I got a shirt for Christmas that read "I didn't lose my mind, I sold it on eBay!"
