My BJD Brainrot

THE DOLL BLOG NOBODY ASKED FOR
Welcome to the blog, a chaotic archive of doll ramblings, art struggles, collecting disasters, customization experiments, and whatever financial mistakes I've convinced myself are "self-care." I ramble about BJDs, review them, attempt to customize them, and occasionally have an emotional meltdown. Think of this blog as a chaotic diary made by someone who keeps buying dolls despite having no space, no restraint, and no intention of stopping. If you’re here for structure or stability, you took a wrong turn. Enjoy the chaos.
Note: Some of the blog posts are blank. I am slowly but surely fixing them. There are a lot, so it takes time.

$38 BJD Body Review | LingMiao Doll Unboxing, Joint Test & Taobao Budget Find

Welcome to Part 2 of this entirely avoidable journey.

In the previous installment, I unboxed a tail and discovered that even accessories can betray you.
This time, we’re dealing with something far more dangerous:

Suspiciously cheap doll bodies.
Each of these bodies cost… $38. Yes. Thirty-eight dollars. Please note that the price of the US dollar is constantly changing, thus so is my mention of specific prices. $33 one day, $38 the next.

For a 1/4 scale BJD body.

For context, even “budget” bodies usually sit around $50–$100 depending on where you buy them. These were cheaper than my previous budget purchases.

Which should have been a red flag. Instead, I saw it as an opportunity.

No, they are not recast bodies, but PVC just like UFDoll bodies!

🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️ The Accidental Twins

I ended up with:
  • Two identical male bodies
  • One female body

Why? Because at $38, my brain apparently turned off all quality control and said:

“Just click buy. It’ll be fine.”

I am so used to these dolls costing SO MUCH money, I didn't even question the total in my shopping cart!

To be fair, I do have a lot of floating heads, so they will get used. But still.

Two. 🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️

🧠 Surprise: Free Heads I Didn’t Ask For

The male bodies came with heads.

I did not expect this. I did not need this.

I already own enough floating heads to form a small, silent audience that watches me make bad decisions.

So naturally, I’m selling them. And since they are PVC heads, they go against Den of Angels rules so I can only list them on Mercari and eBay. One has already sold.

🔧 Joint Quality: Acceptable, But…

The joints are… okay.

They function. They bend. They exist.

But:
  • The thigh joint has an oddly long connector
  • Certain poses look awkward
  • A loose knee joint
  • An elbow swivel joint (that the male body does NOT have)

It’s not terrible. It’s just not impressive.

This feels like the Withdoll situation all over again where features are distributed like prizes in a lottery.

⚠️ The Metal Crimp Situation

Here’s where things get concerning.

Instead of tying the elastic traditionally, it’s secured with a metal crimp.
Which means:
  • Restringing will require cutting it out
  • There’s potential long-term wear on the elastic

It’s not a dealbreaker, but it is a future problem waiting patiently.

The metal crimp is much more visible in the female body. And somehow, it hasn’t damaged the elastic yet. But it feels like a ticking time bomb.

Seeing as how these are mass-produced, unlike resin BJDs this was probably faster and easier for the assembly team. So I can see why they were used.

👠 The Female Body: Slightly Better? Slightly Worse?

The female body comes with:
  • Multiple hand options
  • High heel feet

Which is great… until you compare it to the male body and realize:
  • The male got a head but no extras
  • The female got extras but no head

Pick a lane.

However, I think the male was having a special ordering period where you got a gift head with the body? I don't know.

🖤 Final Verdict

So what’s the conclusion?

For $38:
  • They’re not bad
  • They’re not amazing
  • They’re… exactly what you’d expect from something that costs $38

You get:
✔ Functional bodies
✔ Some nice extras (depending on which one you get)
❌ Inconsistencies
❌ Questionable design choices
❌ Future restringing problems

This entire experience can be summarized as:
“It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

And honestly? It kind of still is.

🆚 PVC or Resin?

In all honesty, it’s surprisingly difficult to tell the difference between resin and PVC bodies at a glance. PVC has come a long way, and visually, it holds its own.

That said, the biggest downside right now is availability.

There just aren’t many companies producing larger PVC bodies in 1/4 or 1/3 scale. Most stick to smaller sizes like 1/6 or 1/12 for blind box dolls, which leaves those of us in the bigger scale range digging through scraps.

1/3 PVC bodies are basically cryptids. 🦄 I’ve only managed to find three, and all of them come from UFDoll.

1/4 bodies are becoming more common, but options are still pretty limited. Here’s what I’ve found so far:
  • UFDoll – 1/3 and 1/4
    • 1/3 male: 3 body types
    • 1/3 female: 1 body type
    • 1/4 male: 2 body types
    • 1/4 female: 2 body types
  • Dalili (Dollsphere.com) – 2 different bodies (1/4 scale)
  • Nayomi (Dollsphere.com) – 2 different bodies (1/4 scale)

And that’s… about it. Not exactly a thriving ecosystem.

🌈 The second downside is color.

With resin BJDs, you can get just about any color your heart desires, especially from companies that offer custom casting like Resinsoul. Want purple? Easy. Black? Done. Deep, rich chocolate brown? Absolutely.

PVC? Not so much.

The color range is… safe. Very safe. Suspiciously safe. The colors range from white to slightly less white. UFDoll has a tan....

😤 My personal gripe

All of the PVC bodies are… normal.

No anthro dolls.
No grotesque sculpts.
No weird proportions.
No “what am I even looking at” energy.

And that’s a problem, because weird is exactly what I want.

Give me the unsettling. The uncanny. The slightly cursed.

Right now, PVC is playing it way too safe… and I need it to start making worse decisions.

🔮 What’s Next

I’ll probably test different heads on these and post that on my blog. Or I will post them up on DollFinder.org, a rather failed project of mine.

Because clearly, I haven’t learned anything.
